I'm currently remodeling my bathroom and want to install an exhaust fan. My setup has never had one, and I'll need to drill through my flat rubber membrane roof. The ceiling height is around 16 to 18 inches. Is it correct that I just need to drill a long hole straight through and then install the fan, a vent pipe, and maybe a decorative cap? I'm unsure about the best way to drill through the roof. I know sealing around the pipe is a must, but any guidance on the drilling process would be appreciated!

If your bathroom is on an exterior wall, you could think about running the vent through the wall instead. I just did one in my basement and it was pretty simple to just vent it straight outside.
Typically, you wouldn’t need a fancy termination cap for a bath fan. It might be easier to go through the side wall after reaching the attic! All you'll need is a screened cap at the end, which makes it cleaner.
That makes sense for most cases! But with the plaster and lathe, plus my flat roof and short height, it’s tricky since I probably can’t access an attic.

I considered that briefly, but I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of the plaster and lathe inside, plus the brick on the outside.
