Tips for Measuring and Leveling a Concrete Floor with Self-Leveling Compound

I'm planning to DIY a 3.6 m x 7 m concrete floor using a self-leveling compound before installing hybrid flooring. The floor has some significant unevenness, with about 24mm of dip in the center and various low spots ranging from 6mm to 3mm. I'm wondering how I can accurately measure and know when I've reached the right level during the self-leveling process. I've got a couple of questions: 1) Would a gauge rake be useful on an uneven floor? I understand its use for a consistent depth, but for my situation, I'll need to adjust it for each spot, which seems impractical. What's the best way to utilize it? 2) I've heard about using nails to mark the required depth. Should I leave these nails buried under the leveler, or is it better to remove them? Given the number of uneven spots I might have, I'm concerned about having too many nails and how they'll interfere with the spreading process. I aim to hit a very tight tolerance of 2mm over 2 meters for the flooring. Any practical tips from those who've tackled this kind of project?

Another tip is to consider using markers specifically designed for this purpose, like plaster markers. They can provide a clear reference for your depth without the clutter of too many nails. Just ensure that whatever method you choose, it’s practical and manageable for the amount of floor you’re working with.

It's crucial to get the mixing part right! The proportions need to be spot on, or else you might have a mess on your hands. I had a few batches that just didn't work out because I miscalculated the water ratio. Start with a solid mix and make sure it has that syrupy texture; that will help it self-level better. Can't stress this enough—take the time to mix thoroughly!

Totally agree! I noticed some people add a bit more water than recommended, aiming for that perfect consistency. It's all about finding that balance!

For your leveling process, using a gauge rake can be tricky on uneven floors. What I recommend is to get a few reference points with a laser level to establish a baseline. Instead of constantly adjusting the rake, find a few high points and work down from there. For the nails, yes, you can leave them in, but be careful about how many you use since they can get in the way while spreading the compound. Do a test area first to see how it goes!
