I'm planning to mount a 30-inch TV on my nice pine wall, and I really want to avoid any damage. I'm fairly new to home improvement, so I'd love some advice on what I need to do to make sure I don't mess things up. Are there any specific steps I should follow or special tools I should use?

Check out a product called Hangsmart! It’s easy to use, highly rated, and doesn’t require mounting to a stud. Since a 30-inch TV is quite light, it might be a good option unless you really need a pivot arm for adjusting the angle.
The main thing is to take your time and do it right the first time to avoid drilling extra holes. You definitely want some screws from the mount to go into a stud for security. A stud finder should work well on wood paneling; you could also look for nails along the paneling that may indicate where the studs are—these usually follow a vertical line.
Before you start, mark the stud location with a pencil and double-check the height and level of the mount with a small level. Once you've got everything lined up, mark your screw holes using the mount as a guide. I suggest pre-drilling the holes to prevent the paneling from splitting—use a drill bit that's slightly smaller than the screws. Then, just hold the mount back up and screw it in place!
I’d also suggest using painter's tape to create a rectangle on the wall the size of your TV. This way, you can see how it would look before you commit to mounting it.
