Tips for Painting an Herb Box

Hey everyone! I know this might be a bit off-topic, but my boyfriend made a lovely herb box for his mom, and I'm planning to paint it. I'd love some advice on two things: 1) What type of paint should I use that will last? I was thinking basic acrylic with a sealant on top. 2) For the design, his suggestion is to paint popular herbs, but I want to keep it open for other plants she might want to grow. If you were receiving an herb box, would you prefer it to have herbs painted on it, or maybe some native plants from our area for a bit of variety? Oh, and I'm definitely including a cardinal design too!

I’m all for birds and vines! They fit any plants she might choose and can go with a variety of painting styles. If you want to keep it indoors, I’d recommend staining the box first and painting acrylics on top. It looks great and holds up well if you seal it with polyurethane. I found that Lowe's and Home Depot sell it cheaper than art stores, and you can get it in matte finish which looks nicer than glossy. The sealant will help her clean it easily if needed later on.

Yay, I’m excited about the birds! Would that technique work for an outdoor box too?

That sounds like such a fun project! It could make for a great date night too! Just curious, what type of wood is the box made from? I'd love to see the details on that.

He made it with his dad, it’s really adorable! I’m checking on the wood type now!
