Tips for Planting Daffodils and Black Eyed Susans Together

Hey everyone! I'm new to gardening and ready to try something out of my comfort zone. I want to plant daffodils and black eyed Susans this fall here in Maryland, where both thrive. Since they bloom at different times, can I plant them together in the same area? How much space should I leave between them? I was also thinking of adding another plant that blooms in between or maybe some lavender to keep mice away, but I wonder if that's too many plants?

I wouldn’t worry about spacing too much! Daffodils come up super early in spring, way before the black eyed Susans start to bloom, so they’ll thrive at different times. Fall is the perfect season to plant your bulbs and perennials, you’ve got this!

Great choice with those flowers! Just a tip: cut back black eyed Susans to ground level at the end of the season. It keeps things looking tidy during winter. They do spread, but deadheading helps manage that. Good luck!

Awesome advice! Here’s a pic of my black eyed Susans after cutting them back—looks much better! https://preview.redd.it/1p7ids99ozif1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a245dbff12cf93caa173504ce102eed28c7fb373

Don't stress too much about packing them in. As far as spacing goes, as long as you give enough room for the black eyed Susans, your daffodils will find their way through. I’ve planted them quite densely before and it works! I think adding purple coneflowers could be a nice touch since they bloom at a different time too. Also, I love how daffodils look in clumps; try 3-5 per hole for a natural look!

Here’s a pic of my garden last year with a similar setup! You can see how nice they look closely together. https://preview.redd.it/a97hbrl78zif1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e94ef15f84b97b0300d13e79f469901306d53cce

You can absolutely plant them together! Just keep in mind to give them some space like good neighbors who don’t want to share a driveway. Daffodils bloom before black eyed Susans, so they won’t compete for sunlight too much. It sounds like a great idea!
