Tips for Replacing a Noisy Bathroom Exhaust Fan

Asked By SunnyDaze89 On

I'm dealing with a loud bathroom exhaust fan connected to a timer switch. While it works, I find it extremely noisy and would like to either replace the motor or the entire unit. I'm open to both options but a bit unsure about which route to take. The housing dimensions are 8" x 7", and the label indicates it's an HVI Home Ventilating Institute unit (C-64322, 50 CFM, 4.0 sones). Any advice on whether to swap out just the motor or go for a complete unit replacement would be appreciated!

First off, definitely unplug the power before you start working on your fan! The fan and motor should be easy to remove—just look for the edges that say ‘pull’ or ‘push’ to release. Once you have those off, check for any model numbers on the old motor. If you're going for a motor replacement, getting a similar one is usually your best bet. But if you find the housing is also in rough shape, it might just be easier to consider replacing the entire unit. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips! Once I get the unit out, should I really focus on matching the model number closely or can I look for something with similar specs instead?
