Tips for Safely Laying Felt on a Shed Roof Without Climbing On It

Hey everyone, I'm building a log cabin-style pent shed (5x3m), and I'm at the point where I need to lay felt on the roof. The problem is, I can't reach the middle of the roof from my ladder. I'm also concerned about the weight—I'm not exactly light, and I'm worried my weight might cause the purlins or roof boards to give way if I climb up. Has anyone figured out a safe way to do this? Any suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks!

One option is to shore up the roof from the inside with some 2x6s. This way, you can create support without risking damage to the roof itself. It’ll give you a safe surface to work from when laying the felt.

Consider getting a smaller friend to help out! Kidding aside, if you’re feeling uneasy about climbing on it alone, maybe work with someone smaller or find another method to secure the felt without getting on the roof.

If the roof can’t hold your weight, you have to question if it can endure other loads like snow or rain. Since you’re already worried, it might be best to shore it up from underneath to ensure it can handle everything.
