Tips for Safely Removing a Pocket Door in an Old House

I recently bought a 100-year-old home that has a pocket door measuring about 48 inches by 78 inches and it's solid core. I've looked online for advice and it seems like lifting the door should allow the wheels to come off the track. However, I'm having a tough time making it work. I've even taken off the trim to give myself more room, but no luck yet. I'm looking for any clever solutions that won't damage the walls or the door itself!

It sounds like your pocket door might not be on a J track like you thought. It's likely using a flat iron track with 4-inch wheels. To get it out, you might need to create a small opening in the wall to access the roller bolts. If the door was installed after the 1920s, you may find a release hasp on the top of the door, but you’ll still need to remove all trim around it to get it fully out. Good luck!

What does a release hasp look like? And how do you operate it?
