I'm new to gardening and planning to use 15-gallon grow bags for my veggies, but I'm shocked at how much potting mix costs! I found some 50 Qt. Organic Miracle Grow at Costco for $9.59, but for 22 bags, that totals $220 just for the dirt! Plus, I'm concerned that 15-gallon bags might be too big for a single plant. Even planting multiple plants in one bag would drive up costs since each plant is about $5. I struggle with starting from seeds too. Can anyone share strategies for saving on potting mix? Also, can I reuse potting mix from previous years if I add some compost to it? It seems like gardening is turning out to be expensive! Ha!

YouTube is filled with tutorials on making your own potting mix for much less than store-bought bags! A simple mix can include peat moss or coco coir, compost, perlite or vermiculite, and a slow-release fertilizer. Check it out and save some cash!
Look for landscaping supply stores nearby. They sell garden soil and compost in bulk, which can be way more affordable. Just be aware of minimum order requirements, but it might help to lower your costs significantly!
I will definitely look into that next season. Thanks!
Many landfills offer compost or garden mix for free or for a low fee. It could save you some money, so it might be worth checking out!
I'll look into it. Thanks!
Have you tried checking local lawn and garden stores? They often sell potting mix in bulk, which can save you a lot of money compared to bagged options.
Thanks. I'll look into that next season.
Consider renting a tiller from Home Depot! They have a 4-hour rental for around $76, which is a lot cheaper than buying tons of bags. Just a thought if you ever decide to go for raised beds!
Good call on that. I want to stick with potted plants, but raised beds might be in my future.

Thanks! I'll check it out!
