Tips for Starting My First Garden Plot

Hey everyone! I'm super excited because, after years on the waitlist, I finally got my own rented garden plot! I want to start prepping it right away for spring, but I have a few questions that are holding me back. First, I plan to till the ground to create in-ground beds. My plan is to till down about 4-5 inches, then add 1-2 inches of compost, and finally top it off with enough topsoil to reach about 12 inches deep. However, I'm worried this might be too expensive or even needlessly complicated. Am I misunderstanding something here? Can I even till that deep with a motorized tiller? Second, can I just dig a 6-inch trough, dump compost on top, and mix it with the soil I just dug out to create a bed instead? Any tips on how to get started would be greatly appreciated too—there's just a ton of information out there and it's a bit overwhelming!

Sounds like you're overthinking it a bit! Hey, quick questions for you—what was the plot previously used for, how big is it, and what do you plan on growing? Generally, if the soil isn’t terrible, you don’t need to replace the topsoil completely unless there are major issues. It’s likely much simpler than you think!

Haha, you’re right! I guess I got a little carried away. The plot’s in a community garden, and I think it was used for veggies and flowers before, but now it’s just flat. It’s 20 by 25, which feels a bit daunting! I’m aiming to create rows for tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and a sprinkle of herbs and flowers. Thanks for the encouragement!
