Tips for Visiting Brimfield Flea Market for Hand Tools

Asked By ToolHound99 On

I'm planning my first-ever trip to the Brimfield Flea Market in May, and I'd love to hear from anyone who's been there before. I'm specifically on the lookout for some hand tools, including a No. 4 1/2 and a No. 7 bench plane, a Starrett combo square, a bevel gauge, and possibly a hand saw. Are there any must-see vendors or should I just explore? I've heard it's tough to see everything in one day, so I aim to be strategic about my visit. Any tips or advice would really help—thanks!

Brimfield is a blast! You can definitely find tools there, but don’t get your hopes up for snagging bargains since there’s a lot of competition. Keep in mind that different fields open on different days, so wearing comfy shoes and bringing a backpack is a smart move. And let’s hope for good weather! By the way, if you’re in the area, check out the big tool show and auction in Brookline, NH on the 23rd and 24th—better deals there!

Good to know about the fields! Do you know which fields are best for tools? It’s tough to tell since they all say ‘antiques and collectibles.’ Also, a bummer about the deals, but it sounds like it’ll still be fun. Too far for Brookline, though—thanks for the heads up!

You might struggle to find a good deal on a 4 1/2 since they’re pretty uncommon. You’d have better luck checking out PATINA or mwtca for a cheaper No. 7. Just a heads-up, if you’re newer to hand tools and don’t have a jointer yet, I’d suggest reconsidering the 4 1/2. It’s cool, but a standard No. 4 can do the job just as well!

I already have a No. 4 and a low-angle jack. I use the 4 for more scrub work, might be user error on my part. I thought a 4 1/2 would give me something different as another smoother, but I’d be fine with either!
