If you've got dogs, that can be a simple solution! Squirrels tend to stay away where they smell or sense a predator, so having a pooch around might just do the trick! Plus, you get a furry friend as a bonus!
I've noticed that if I distract the squirrels with sunflower seeds at my bird feeders, they hardly bother my garden. It seems like they're too busy munching on those to come after my plants!
