Hey everyone! I'm in the midst of installing a curbless shower in my bathroom using a Schluter shower tray, but I've hit a snag. The outside area of the shower tray is typically covered with Ditra or Ditra XL, but my tile choice features a mix of 2" hex tiles and 1" border squares in a mosaic pattern. The 2" hexes work fine with Ditra, but unfortunately, the 1" squares don't seem to be compatible. I initially planned to use cement board for the remaining bathroom floor topped with Kerdi membrane, but I was told by Schluter that this installation is unsupported. They have no alternate solution for me. I'm also considering using Ditra, but I'm worried that the smaller 1" tiles might crack over time. My last option would be to forgo the 1" tiles altogether and just use 2" tiles, but I really love the historic vibe of the tiles I've already ordered. Any advice or thoughts on how to tackle this?

Have you thought about pouring a pan instead and using RedGard? With smaller tiles and custom setups, a Hardie backer with RedGard or a poured pan can sometimes be a better route to go! Just a thought!
Just curious, but is there a specific reason you can't use small tiles with the membrane? I get that with Ditra it can be an issue since the bumps may collapse. They should specify why the membrane won’t work over cement board – it doesn’t seem right to rule it out without a solid explanation.
