Hey everyone, I live in a block of six flats where we all share a back garden, but it's pretty much ignored except for a couple of washing lines and an occasional barbecue. The vibe is quite unfriendly, and most of the kids even play in the parking lot instead of the garden. I really want to transform this space since it's a bit disheartening to have it go to waste! I'm planning to put in benches, raised garden beds, and even some bird feeders and bee hives since I don't get out as much anymore.
I'm interested in growing herbs like lavender, parsley, and thyme, as well as some vegetables like tomatoes and carrots. I've been told I can take over 1/6th of the garden, but I need to find a way to create a cozy area without putting up any fencing. I was thinking of arranging raised beds in a way that leads to a central point, possibly a bench or small tree. I'd love some advice on how to make this work despite my neighbors possibly being a bit of a hassle!

First off, who told you that you could claim part of the garden? If it's your housing advisor, then it's worth verifying with the council to ensure you have permission to make changes. Regarding your unfriendly neighbors, it sounds like they might give you some trouble. A good idea is to drop them a letter explaining your plans. That way, they know what's coming and they might appreciate that you aren’t cutting them out of the space!

Sounds like a great project! I recommend starting with some pots to minimize your investment and see how it goes. Just keep in mind that you might always feel a bit watched due to the neighbor's windows overlooking the garden. I was thinking along those lines too! Maybe if I can add some trellises with flowers, it’ll feel a bit more secluded.
I got that info when I moved in! They even run gardening competitions to encourage us to take care of the garden. I might just have to let them know about my plans and hope for the best.
