Hey everyone! I just need to vent a little and hear from others who might relate. I recently bought a Victorian home with plans to restore it, thinking it would be my dream project. But honestly, it's become a total nightmare! Contractors are charging me over $8,000 a week for work that barely seems to progress. I've already shelled out more than $60,000 on labor and materials, yet the place is still far from livable.
Now, I'm facing unexpected expenses like a new roof, furnace, and central air, all while dealing with significant water damage repairs. I even had to send my family away because the house has become unsafe and non-functional, which is really tough emotionally on top of the financial strain. Each day feels like I take one step forward and then two steps back. I'm feeling exhausted, drained, and second-guessing my decision to get into this project. Has anyone else felt that the supposed "dream house" turned into a nightmare? How did you manage to get through it?

Didn’t you get a set price for the work? If you're paying hourly, they tend to drag it out. You might want to set clear expectations and milestones with them from now on.
I feel for you. Victorian homes are so beautiful but can become real money pits. It sounds like you're in the tough part. Once you can tackle the big issues, you’ll see progress. Remember that it takes time, and taking care of essential repairs first is the way to go!
You're definitely going to figure this out! Make your contractors commit to a timeline with solid proposals—get it in writing. While it’s tough with your family living elsewhere, it’s smart for safety. Maybe start creating little traditions to stay connected, like family dinners? Stay strong and remember, you hold the funds. This will pass!
Thanks BearMama0321, exactly what I needed to hear.
I’ve been in your shoes, and it can feel overwhelming—the costs just pile up! Focus on what's necessary first, like the roof and plumbing. There's often more work to do than you anticipate. You're going to get through this, just take it one step at a time!
You’re not alone; many have faced similar challenges! It's easy to underestimate costs with these old homes. Make sure to prioritize safety and fix major issues. It takes longer and costs more than expected, but just hang on—there's light at the end of the tunnel. Once the critical stuff is done, you can finally enjoy the place. Keep pushing through!
I totally get your struggle! Having worked on many historical homes, I've seen it all. Often, homeowners underestimate the budget. If you're quoted a price, expect it to soar by about 30-50%. It's crucial to have realistic expectations. Also, ensure your contractor is using proper equipment, like a good HEPA vacuum, especially if you're dealing with lead paint and dust. Take a moment to ask them what's urgent and what can wait. Patience is key; safely restore the house bit by bit. Hang in there, you're not alone!
Thank you for this solid advice...and for listening to my rant.
You provide a price and know it’s gonna be more? Bad practice.
Man, this is a rough ride! Hiring contractors can be a double-edged sword, and it’s frustrating when you feel stuck and can’t trust them. Focus on key projects and take your time; you’ll get through this sooner than you think!
Just break your project into smaller tasks. Don't pay everything upfront, and try to do some of the work yourself. I know it’s exhausting, but it could save you some money and teach you a lot along the way. You've got this!

No set price. "Hard to know how much until we get in there". That was 6 weeks ago when I needed urgent repairs...I learned a lot the hard way with this one.
