I've always watered my garden by hand, but this year I picked up a soaker hose for one of my raised beds. My main question is: how do I know how much water is actually coming through the hose? I've got small rain gauges in my other beds, but those won't work for this setup. Any tips on how I can measure the water my garden is receiving?

I had the same question when I got my 50-foot soaker hose! When I laid it out on a dry bed and turned it on, the water soaked the first 20 feet pretty well, but there was hardly any water coming out at the end. So it really depends on the water pressure and how flat the surface is. Also, I’ve heard the soaker hoses from places like Harbor Freight can kink, which might reduce water flow.
There are a few good methods you can try! One straightforward way is to place the length of soaker hose you plan to use into a five-gallon bucket and time how long it takes to fill up. This way, you can calculate the flow rate. Alternatively, you could use an inline flow meter between your hose and the soaker hose for more accurate measurements.
Honestly, you might not even need a flow meter. If you check the soil moisture, just run the soaker hose until the soil is as wet as you want it. It's pretty simple! If the soil is dry, keep it going until it feels right.
