Unexplained Noises Under My Duplex – What Could It Be?

Hey everyone! I live in a duplex in Alaska, and I'm dealing with this weird issue: about once every hour, I hear this loud hum or vibration coming from underneath my house, followed by a significant thud. It sounds just like a garage door opening, but no one in my neighborhood has a garage. I'm curious if anyone has any ideas about what might be causing these strange sounds?

Could it be your furnace? I know you mentioned it’s off right now, but sometimes the vibrations can come from older heating systems. Just a thought!

That’s a good point! I totally forgot that even when it’s off, it could still cause some noise. Thanks for bringing that up!

Have you checked if there’s a sump pump? Those can make some noise, especially if they are on the fritz. Look for any plumbing in the area that might indicate its presence, though I get it can be tricky to spot if you have stuff covering your crawlspace.

I’m new to homeownership and didn't even know what a sump pump was until now! I’ll definitely look into it once I clear out some things.
