Upgrading My Spray Gun: Is It Worth the Extra Cash?

I've been using a purple Harbor Freight spray gun for about 5 years for my projects, and it was a massive upgrade compared to brushes and rollers. Now, I need multiple spray guns for switching between dyes and clear coats. I've seen similar-looking guns priced 10-15 times higher and I'm wondering if there's a significant difference that justifies the cost. Is there a mid-range option that would provide a noticeable upgrade?

Most spray guns essentially do the same job, but how they operate and mix air with finish can differ a lot. I recommend looking for a good HVLP gun paired with a compressor for better results. If you're working on cabinets, a small gravity-fed gun from a hobby store could also work well for your projects, and they’re usually quite effective if you manage your compressor properly.

Sounds good! I've got a 60-gallon compressor with moisture control, so I should be set for whatever gun I choose.

From my experience, the finish quality you get from higher-end spray guns like DeVilbiss and Iwata is often superior. They do a better job of atomizing the paint, resulting in a smoother finish, especially for clear coats. While you can get good results with cheaper guns like the Harbor Freight models, it might require more skill to avoid issues like orange peel, which is less of a problem with pricier options.

If you're looking for a quality gun, expect to spend around $150-$200 for something decent, like Iwata or Meiji. Upper-end guns can hit $500, but if you’re just a hobbyist using it once in a while, a cheaper option might be just fine for you. Consider how often you'll use it before making the investment—if it's just occasionally, a well-made economy gun might still give you the quality you need without breaking the bank.

Brands like Binks and DeVilbiss have solid reputations and are known for being reliable. I've used a Binks Mack 1 for over 20 years without a hitch while spraying everything from cabinets to tables. These guns also have replaceable parts, making them easy to maintain.
