Using 2x2s for Framing a Non-Load Bearing Wall: Is It a Good Idea?

I'm working on a cozy little reading nook under my basement stairs, and I'm looking to frame one exterior wall with 2x2s against the concrete. I'm insulating it with foam board, but the other two walls will be framed with 2x4s. My main concern is if it's okay to use 2x2s for that one wall. I know it's just a couple of inches, but space is tight, and I'd love to get some drywall up. Any thoughts?

Using foam board against the concrete and then attaching furring strips on top is a solid way to go. You shouldn’t need to add much else beyond that for a non-load bearing wall.

We had a contractor frame a similar basement wall with 2x2s, and it held up well for over 12 years! He secured the 2x2s with construction adhesive to the concrete, and I don't recall him using insulation either. Just a heads up though: if you're thinking of adding outlets or switches, there might not be enough space for electrical boxes.

Yeah, but there are shallow electrical boxes available. They have extra space on the side for excess wire, which could help you out!
