Using Weeds in Water for Homemade Plant Fertilizer?

Asked By GreenThumber99 On

Hey everyone! I recently came across a mention of making plant feed by soaking weeds in water. I remember reading something about leaving them for a while to ferment, but I'm not exactly sure how it works. Does anyone here have experience with this method? Are there specific types of plants that work best for this, or can any weeds do the trick? Right now, I have a bucket filled with weeds and some tomato plants fermenting away. Curious to hear your thoughts!

Comfrey and nettles are top choices for this! They’ll create some potent brew, but might not immediately show results. Just pick the leaves, not needing cuttings. And remember to strain it and dilute a bit before using. Try searching for 'comfrey tea fertilizer' to find more specific recipes. It can take a few months to fully decompose, so patience is key here!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely check that out. Homemade fertilizer is the way to go!

Yeah, this is a really common method! Using comfrey is great for potassium, especially when your veggies are flowering or bearing fruit. Just gather some leaves, fill a bucket with water, and let it steep for about 6-8 weeks. The dilution ratio should ideally be about one part tea to ten parts water. And just a heads up, the smell can be quite something—wear gloves when you use it because it sticks around!

Sounds like I need to stock up on gloves then! Thanks for the heads up!

Yep, you’re talking about making weed tea! It’s a legit way to create a free fertilizer and you can use most types of weeds. Just toss them in water and let them sit for about six months. Make sure to keep it covered; otherwise, you’ll be inviting a swarm of mosquitoes! And be warned—the smell is overwhelming! It really helps to aerate it by stirring every now and then, though some say that’s just an unverified tip. Just brace yourself for the aroma!

Haha, definitely sounds like a nasal assault waiting to happen! But free fertilizer is hard to turn down.

I didn't believe it until I tried it. It stinks to high heaven but my plants seemed to love it!
