Veritas Combination Plane vs. Small Plow Plane: What’s the Better Choice?

I'm looking to get a dedicated plowing plane and I'm torn between the Veritas Combination Plane and the Small Plow Plane. The Small Plow seems to be more popular, but I'm not so sure why. From what I've gathered:

- If I remove one of the skates from the Combination Plane, I essentially have a Small Plow, but the combination gives me a micro-adjusting fence, longer rods, and a scoring knife.
- Some say the Combination is heavier, but if I switch out a skate while using smaller blades, shouldn't it be similar in weight?
- For using wider blades, like for tongue and groove or dados, the Combination looks to be more effective than the Small Plow with its conversion kit.
- Setup appears to be slower for the Combination, but it has more knobs on the micro-adjusting fence, which should make things easier.

So, I'm wondering if the Small Plow really outperforms the Combination, aside from its price point. What do you all think?

The Small Plow is definitely favored for smaller projects like drawers or small boxes, as it does those tasks effortlessly. If you're working on larger projects, though, the Combination Plane is better suited for tasks like beading or rabbets. I've used the Veritas planes a lot, and while they might have more knobs, setting them up isn't that complicated once you get the hang of it!

I totally agree! I mainly use the Small Plow because it's lightweight and straightforward for smaller grooves. For larger cuts, the Combination’s features are definitely handy.
