Water Damaged Carpet: Should We Replace Just the Padding or Everything?

Hello everyone! My mom had a little flood in the bathroom that spilled water into the hallway and a bedroom. We called a company for help, but instead of removing the carpet, they only cut out half of the padding in the bedroom and a small section in the hallway. My mom wants to replace just the cut-out padding and reinstall the same carpet, but I think that's not the best idea. I feel like we should take out all the padding in the room and maybe even get new carpet for the room and hallway while we're at it. However, she's worried that might be too big of a task since moving all the furniture will be a hassle and could be more expensive. What do you all think? Is it okay to just replace the cut-out padding, or should we consider replacing everything?

It's not really practical to just replace parts of the pad or carpet. Any good installer would suggest doing it right. If anything got wet, it's best to remove it completely. Honestly, it seems strange that they only took out padding without touching the carpet. You might want to rethink this approach and make sure everything is truly dry before getting new materials.

You can definitely replace just the cut sections of the padding. However, keep in mind that labor costs more than the materials. The padding itself is about 50 cents per square foot, but the work involved—like cutting, stretching, and possibly power stretching—adds to the labor costs. Plus, you'll likely have to move the furniture to get an even stretch, which is another thing to consider.
