What Are Realistic Expectations for Tiling Progress?

We recently hired a tiler to install tiles in our kitchen, which is about 60 sq ft. After the first day of work, we noticed some irregularities in the tiling. Is this something that's typical at this early stage? Will these issues become less visible once the job is finished? Additionally, we initially planned to use grey grout, but would switching to white be a better option to help hide the imperfections?

Yikes, it definitely doesn’t look great from that image. If I were you, I’d consider bringing in someone else to evaluate the work. It’s better to redo it now than to have it look sloppy later on. Grout can help a bit, but if the tiles are really uneven, it might just be hiding bigger problems. Don’t settle for a half-done job!

Honestly, it looks like the job is off to a rocky start. If the grout joints aren't even and everything is wonky, I’d say it might be worth talking to your tiler about it. Grout can cover up small mistakes, but you really want a solid foundation. If you're seeing major issues now, they might not just disappear when it's all done. Switching to white grout could help a little with appearance, but I’d focus on making sure the tiling is done right first.

Seeing those irregularities, I agree that they’re pretty noticeable already! I think if you’re not happy with the initial work, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask your tiler to fix it. Maybe they can adjust things before it gets sealed with grout. As for the color, white grout can help minimize the visual impact of flaws, but who wants to fix things later? Better to get it right the first time!
