What Are Some Alternatives to a Spindle Sander for Fixing Router Templates?

I've cut a router template but the edges aren't vertical because my jigsaw blade deflected during the cut. I don't have a spindle sander which would be ideal for cleaning this up. Does anyone have suggestions for alternative methods or tools I can use to fix the edges? I've got a basic toolkit as a beginner.

I get your frustration! Using a router with a flush trim bit could be the way to go. If you trim the edges with it, you might fix that angled cut problem before sanding it down.

You can use sandpaper wrapped around a cylinder, like a rolling pin or a piece of PVC pipe. It's a pretty decent substitute for a spindle sander, especially with 1/4" MDF for your template.

If you have a drill press, you can find some affordable sanding attachments that work well as a spindle sander alternative. It could help you smooth out those edges nicely.

Using rasps is a great option! A Shinto rasp, for instance, has both coarse and fine sides, letting you shape materials quickly without breaking the bank. Plus, sandpaper on a sanding block is also effective, especially if you need different shapes.
