What Are Some Creative Project Ideas for a Woodworking Class?

I'm about to take over a woodworking class at a prison/detention center and I'm looking for some engaging project ideas. We have access to most basic hand tools, plus a range of power tools like a router table, mitre saw, and band saw. However, we don't have a planer, just hand planes. I'm open to any cool or unique projects that can be incorporated into the curriculum.

Starting with simple projects like cutting boards is a great way to ease into woodworking. As their skills progress, you could introduce birdhouses, which allow for more complex designs. It's a fun way to mix skill-building with creativity!

Check out dovetail boxes! They can range from small, thoughtful gifts like salt cellars to larger keepsake boxes. You might want to kick off the class with a little tutorial on tuning the bandsaw for proper wood thickness. Then, once everyone gets the hang of it, they can use the bandsaw again to shape the boxes into bases and lids.

How about making box urns for pets? It might sound a bit morbid, but they can be really meaningful. My husband has made a couple for our pets, and it adds a special touch. Donating them could also bring comfort to others down the line!

That's a touching idea! Crafting something with personal significance could really resonate with the participants.

Definitely! It's a project that holds sentimental value and could provide a real sense of achievement.
