What are some good cat-safe plants for a low-light kitchen window?

I'm looking for suggestions on cat-safe plants that I can place in my kitchen window. The window faces an alley and doesn't receive direct sunlight, but it does get some light throughout the day. I'm considering using herbs for cooking but want to ensure they're safe for my cat. Any advice?

If you're serious about herbs, adding a grow light would definitely help because most herbs are sun lovers. Otherwise, your window might be more on the medium light side. If you skip the grow light, consider some low-light tolerant options like pothos, philodendron, snake plants, or ZZ plants. Just be aware that some of these are mildly toxic. The trick is knowing your cat’s preferences—some cats love to nibble on plants, safe or not. I’ve had some plants around my cats for years without issue!

Herbs can definitely work for you, but I'd suggest focusing on peperomias or hoyas instead. They offer a nice variety in appearance and are pretty easy to care for with medium to bright indirect light. Just remember to water them when the soil feels dry. Plus, both can be propagated easily if you’re into that!

Just a heads-up, hoyas and most herbs really prefer at least some direct sunlight to thrive. If you want to go that route, a grow light might be a good investment.

I have to agree, herbs can struggle without enough light; they can get leggy and weak. Catnip might be a good herb option though, and I really love hoyas!
