Hey everyone! I'm currently working on a project where I need to generate around 20-40 pounds of thrust but I want to keep it relatively small. What options should I consider for this kind of force?

A small CO2 cylinder could be a great option for your needs! It's relatively easy to manage and can generate decent thrust. If you're looking for something along similar lines, using a paintball marker tank might also work well since they can handle higher pressure and are compact.
You might want to consider using small rocket motors! They can pack quite a punch in a compact size. For example, there are motors that produce around 86 Newtons, which is pretty close to your target. Just keep in mind the specifics of your project regarding electronics and what 'pretty small' means to you, as some setups might still require a fair amount of space.
