I'm looking for some advice on planting trees along the edge of my lawn to increase privacy. We have a pathway next to our fence, and my neighbors have raised their garden, which has really reduced our privacy. I'm considering planting 2-3 trees, but I'm struggling to find options that won't grow too tall, ideally around 180-200cm, since I want to future-proof this for my small garden (about 4.5m x 3m). I've ruled out willows due to a retaining wall that I don't want to damage. Ideally, I'd like trees that have bushy tops to block sightlines while still being easily accessible. They also need to be safe for my cat and baby, and they should thrive in full or partial sun. Any suggestions?

How about pleached hornbeam? They make great screens and maintain structural interest even in winter since some leaves stay on. You can control their size and height as well, so they could fit your space nicely!
Actually, 180-200cm is more medium shrub territory, not quite tree height. It sounds like you might be looking for a hedge instead! Consider some upright-growing grasses like *Miscanthus* or *Fargesia*. They can give you the height you need without spreading too much. Also, if you want to control height, a climber on a sturdy trellis could be a great option!
If you're open to fruit trees, a dwarf apple tree might work perfectly! On a dwarfing rootstock, these won’t grow taller than you need, plus they’re safe for kids and pets. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy blossoms in spring and apples in autumn!

Totally agree! A climber would give you the privacy you’re looking for without taking up too much space, and you have control over how tall it gets. Just make sure it’s something that blooms beautifully!
