What Are Some Great Evergreens and Winter Plants for My Garden?

I'm new to gardening and really enjoy acers, but I know they'll just look like bare sticks in winter. I'm considering adding a few winter plants to keep things interesting. What do you all have in your gardens for winter?

Some great options for winter interest are Nandina Domestica, known as heavenly bamboo, which adds lovely color. Fatsia Japonica is fantastic too with its sculptural leaves; there’s even a variegated version for some extra flair. Don’t forget a bay tree for leaves you can use in cooking, plus hardy herbs like rosemary and thyme are evergreen and smell amazing! There are also dogwoods for their colorful stems and twisted hazel for a unique shape.

I’m with you on the fatsia japonica! I just picked up an ukigumo, and I think it’ll look great in my garden too.

If you're looking for something eye-catching, consider Skimmia Japonica Rubella. The red buds last through winter and add a festive touch, plus they’ve recently opened up to beautiful white flowers! I planted mine in half-shade, and they survived the frost; fingers crossed for summer!

Don't overlook the evergreen viburnum; it produces flowers all winter long. Also, varieties like camellias, rosemary, and even heathers can keep your garden looking lively during the colder months. They'll provide some lovely color and fragrance too!
