I'm renovating my mother-in-law's basement after it flooded, and I'm looking to replace her old, standard drop ceiling tiles. I'm already planning to add recessed lighting and get rid of the fluorescent lights, but I want to know if there are any newer or less common ceiling products available that can give the space a fresher, more modern look.

There are tons of options these days! From classic to modern designs, you're sure to find something that fits your style. Many newer tiles are even designed to allow for recessed lighting, which might work perfectly for your plans.
If you're open to it, PVC tiles are a great choice. They look way more stylish than standard acoustic tiles. Just keep in mind that they won't absorb sound as well, so you might need other insulation. You could even install the new PVC tiles right over the old ones for an easier upgrade!
Definitely check out decorative drop ceilings! There are some really nice options available now, and you can often find good deals at places like Costco. I used the Embassy ceiling tiles from there, and they look fantastic. Plus, their customer support for shipping issues was top-notch.
