I'm trying to create a better wall-storage solution for my tools in the workshop. My past experiences with traditional pegboard hooks have been frustrating because they often pull out of the board whenever I take a tool off. I've also tried the hooks with metal retainer clips, but they tend to pop off after a few uses. The only hooks that work well for me are the screw-in types, but they're pretty pricey. I'm looking for suggestions on how to stabilize my hooks or any budget-friendly alternatives to pegboard hooks.

Check out Rockler Hang Tight hooks; they’ve worked wonders for me. Also, I’ve got some older hooks that use two holes strategically placed, and they’ve held up for over 20 years with daily use!
I totally agree! Plywood is a more flexible option than pegboard. I use nails and screws to organize my tools, and I even drill holes in some of the handles for extra stability. It’s easy to rearrange things whenever I need.
Avoid pegboards altogether! Regular plywood lets you create a customized setup without the hassle of standard pegboard. You can use really thin materials for your cleats if you want them to sit flush.
I use these plastic retaining clips with my metal hooks and they work perfectly! No issues so far, and they keep everything secure. Check them out at Ace Hardware if you're interested.
Have you thought about switching to French cleats? They take a bit more time to set up, but they provide much better storage options. You can customize your own hooks, and they can handle more weight than pegboards. I have some setups with plastic bins for small items and magnets for quick access to certain tools. It's really flexible once you've got it going!
Absolutely! I’ve got my own French cleat setup too, and it works like a charm. Super flexible for rearranging as needed.
I've been 3D printing custom hooks for my tools, which is a bit of a time suck, but it's worth it once you nail down the design. I’m also considering using plywood instead of pegboard. It allows you to screw in hardware wherever you need it and looks way cleaner than pegboard once you set it up right.

I second that. Those retaining clips really make a difference!
