Hey everyone! I've recently been inspired by some beginner woodworking projects and decided to embark on a retirement project. I'm planning to build a small speaker box out of Hickory wood, roughly a 6-inch cube. It's really important to me that the joints are airtight for the speaker to work correctly. I'm eager to learn and willing to invest in some tools if necessary. What joint types would you recommend?

Mitered butt joints are a good choice for your project! While they might look nicer, using butt joints with glue and some fasteners—like brad nails or screws—would also work just fine. The key thing is to ensure the joints are tight. If you prefer the aesthetic of mitered corners, go for it; but remember, they can be tricky to get perfect. It really comes down to your personal preference!
If I went straight 45° to 45°, would glue alone be enough? Or should I consider biscuits?
I recommend using rabbets for your speaker box. They not only provide a good fit but can also be easier to work with and help maintain that airtight seal you're looking for!
Oh, I actually like this idea! I looked it up and think it could be a nice alternative.

Thanks for clarifying! That's super helpful.
