What are the best organic methods to deal with root pests without systemic insecticides?

With the recent bans on systemic insecticides in California and other areas, I'm curious about how the community is coping with persistent pests such as root mealybugs, root aphids, and weevils. What organic or alternative strategies have you found effective to tackle these tough nuisances?

I had a root mealybug problem once after bringing a new plant home. I completely removed the soil and rinsed the roots clean. I think I used hydrogen peroxide to get rid of them. Just a heads up, I also got some Bonide Systemic Granules that I tried out for some bugs on a crested Aeonium cutting recently. Definitely useful for those stubborn pests!

Food grade diatomaceous earth has worked great for me! It's most effective when the soil is dry, so I sprinkle it in the soil. You can also mix it with water and spray it on the plant, but I'm not sure about the right ratio or if it might block photosynthesis.

There are surface pesticides available that aren't systemic; they won't absorb into the plant as much and won't leach into your soil! If I really need systemic ones, I usually source them from overseas. Just be cautious about customs issues.
