What are the best roofing options for my house in Illinois?

I have a three-story house in Illinois with an asphalt shingle roof that's over 23 years old. I'm thinking about replacing it since I want to avoid roof repairs as I get older, especially considering the possibility of adding solar panels later. I'm curious about the durability of different roofing options, particularly metal roof shingles. What are the best roofs that can last 30-40 years without major issues?

Before switching to a roofing material with a longer lifespan, check with your insurance company as some might not recognize newer roofing technologies. They may see a new 40-year system as equal to the standard 15-year shingles if they haven't been around long enough.

Asphalt shingles are usually the most cost-effective option. But if you're looking for something more durable, consider a standing seam metal roof instead of metal shingles. It's a bit pricier but lasts longer and requires less maintenance.
