I'm looking for some recommendations on shade trees to plant in my yard in San Diego. I need trees that can handle a lot of sun and ideally avoid attracting bees. It would be great if the trees could also support local birds and wildlife. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Choosing the right shade tree can be tricky! In San Diego, you have to consider your specific climate since it varies quite a lot across the area. If you're open to it, I recommend the Bird of Paradise for fast growth and decent shade. They do flower, but without causing much allergy trouble. Another option is pine trees; they grow tall and can provide great shade but might require a bit of maintenance. Just be cautious about planting grass underneath them due to the soil quality. Oaks are great for eventual shade too, but they grow slowly. If you're looking for something fast, bamboo can be an awesome choice, provided you manage it properly to avoid invasiveness.

Yeah, definitely consider bamboo! Just make sure you plan it well to keep it in check.
