Hey everyone! I live in a mobile home community and have a decent-sized yard, but it's not huge. I'm really interested in planting a few trees for some shade and added curb appeal. Since I'm new to tree planting, I'm looking for suggestions that fit my needs.
I'd prefer smaller trees, maybe something flowering like a cherry blossom or fruit-bearing like apple or pear. I also love the bright yellow of a ginkgo in fall and the striking red of Japanese maples, but I'm a bit wary since I've read some trees aren't great for yards. I'd like something columnar for the corner of my yard.
On another note, I really don't like pine trees because of the mess with needles and sap, though I did see a cool droopy-looking tree that didn't seem to drop needles—if anyone knows what that could be, I'd love to hear about it! Looking forward to your ideas this spring!

Serviceberry is a fantastic choice if you want something edible and that offers beautiful fall color. It really ticks all the boxes for yard trees!
You should definitely look into planting an old man's beard, redbud, or dogwood. They’re all small flowering varieties that work great in residential areas. If you’re looking for a columnar option, the Slender Silhouette sweetgum could be a great choice—it shouldn't produce the spiky fruit! Also, consider the Emerald green arborvitae; it’s a popular columnar plant.
Oh I love dogwoods in the spring ? thanks for the ideas! I’ll check these out!
Have you thought about espalier fruit trees? They’re perfect for smaller spaces and can produce delicious fruit!
TIL sideways trees are a thing ? I’ve never heard of these!
A ginkgo can grow really tall—around 100ft, so it might not be the best fit for your yard. But if you want smaller trees, consider growing fruit trees on dwarf rootstocks or espalier them. Weeping crab apples are compact too. You might like Prunus ‘Rancho’ for a corner location. Also, check out the small white-barked birch (Betula utilis Trinity College) which stays under 10ft wide. Good luck!

Wow, that kind of checks all the boxes for me!!! What a beautiful tree.
