This time, I want to focus on herbs like thyme and small veggies such as green onions, along with some leafy houseplants. Previously, I struggled with fungus gnats and mold in the soil because I was overwatering. I think I'll try bottom watering from the get-go this time.
Before I get started, I'd love to hear any other strategies to prevent gnat infestations and mold right from the start. I've heard of people baking soil—what do you all think about that? Also, I've noticed a few roaches in my apartment, and while I'm keeping food stored safely, I'm worried about attracting them with my plants. Any suggestions? Lastly, I'm a bookworm and want to avoid bad gardening books. Any recommendations for beginners like me, especially about indoor gardening? Thanks a ton!

Great to hear you’re back into plants! As you mentioned, overwatering is the enemy here. Go with a well-draining soil and let your plants dry out almost completely before watering again. To check if your soil’s dry, just poke your finger into it; if it feels dry about an inch deep, it’s time to water.
For those gnats, consider using sticky traps and maybe a flesh-eating plant to help control them. And yeah, baking soil can kill beneficial microbes, so it's not the best idea. Just focus on plant health for pest control instead!
To keep those pesky gnats and mold at bay, focus on good drainage and don’t overwater! Using a decent potting mix is key—go for a chunkier mix for your plants. It helps aerate the soil and reduces the risk of root rot. If the pot is too deep compared to your plant’s root ball, you’ll have soggy soil sitting around, which isn’t great!
Regarding roaches, if you aren’t bringing in a jungle of plants, they typically won’t affect your air quality much. And keep in mind that pests happen, so focus on good plant care rather than trying to eliminate every one!
