What Are the Best Ways to Control Ants in the Garden?

Hey everyone! I'm a first-year gardener and I've come across a ton of ants in my garden beds, pots, and even in the ground. Whenever I dig around in the soil, I feel like I'm uncovering thousands of them, plus their eggs! I'm concerned about whether this is harmful to my plants, especially my root vegetables. Does anyone have any effective methods for keeping the ant population in check? I'd really appreciate any advice you can share! Thanks!

Honestly, if they're tiny sugar ants, they’re usually harmless. But if you spot any big carpenter ants, that’s a problem! I’ve had good luck using cornmeal; they take it back to their nests, and it dries them out.

I like mixing borax with sugar and putting it in small containers around the garden. Just drill small holes in the lids to let the ants in. It works pretty well and helps keep them away!

If the ants aren’t leafcutter types, I wouldn’t stress too much. But keep an eye out for aphids since ants often farm them. I found some on one of my plants, but luckily, I monitored them weekly afterward. Just a heads-up, I freaked out when I harvested my potatoes and saw a swarm of ants! Still, they didn’t harm my plants in the end.
