I'm diving into furniture making and planning to gradually invest in better tools. While I have some experience with table saws, I currently don't own one and am aiming to save up for a SawStop due to its added safety features. I'm wondering, how can I rip boards effectively without a table saw? I own a handheld circular saw and am considering whether to use that or wait to buy a small contractor's saw and build a table for it. I appreciate any advice or suggestions!

You can definitely make it work with your circular saw! Just clamp a straight edge or fence to your work surface, and that will guide your cuts nicely.
If you're trying to keep costs down, a Makita track saw might be worth looking into. It's a good investment for ripping hardwood and can also handle plywood cuts with a blade swap. Plus, it takes up a lot less space than a table saw, making it ideal for beginners.
I've used a hand saw for ripping boards before, and while it's a workout, it does the job. If you go this route, I'd recommend a hand plane to finish and straighten the edges afterward. And be sure to grab a hand saw specifically designed for ripping if you go that route. It's a handy tool to have for various woodworking tasks!
