What are the safety concerns with using reclaimed wood for projects?

I recently pulled up an old wooden patio in my backyard that had become unsafe. My neighbor used it a couple of years ago, and now I have a bunch of reclaimed boards that seem to be in decent shape. I want to know what I should avoid using this wood for. Specifically, I was thinking about making a compost bin, but I'm unsure if the wood is treated and whether it's safe for gardening. I have around 15 boards that are at least 2 meters long and 17 that are at least 1 meter long, plus some odd pieces. I have limited woodworking experience, with some basic tools like a circular saw and drill, so I'm looking for advice. Is it okay to build things like a pergola or a picnic table? Any tips on finishes or stains?

It depends on when the wood was treated. Most modern treated lumber put on the market after 2003 is safe for gardens since arsenic has been phased out. However, I'd still be cautious about using it for a compost bin, especially if you have kids who might come into contact with it. If you're up for it, a pergola could be a great project if you have the skills!

If these boards were used as deck boards, they were probably treated in some way. It's best not to use them for anything that's going to contact food or compost. Maybe consider using them for something like a flower planter or a bench instead. Just make sure you're cutting outside and wearing a dust mask while working with them!

I think your question's fine! It's smart to check about safety before starting a project. Using reclaimed wood can be tricky, especially if you don’t know its history. A table or bench could be okay, but again, I'd avoid making anything that kids would be tempted to lick or chew on. If you're unsure, giving the wood away might be a good option too!

Thanks for the clarification! It's good to hear I'm thinking about this the right way. I just want to make sure I don't accidentally create something unsafe.
