What Are the Voltage Limits for Wiring in a Solar Panel Setup?
Asked by SunnySideUp123
I'm setting up my first solar system with 9-10 panels on a 40' container and am a bit confused about wiring. Most inverters can handle high voltages, and if I connect the panels in series, I could end up with over 400 volts. Is there a maximum voltage limit I should be aware of for the wires? Also, what wire size is recommended for handling around 15 amps under these conditions?

For solar wiring, most of the typical installations use single core double insulated wires rated for up to 600 volts. If you're using a two core cable, that's also commonly rated for around 600 volts. Some specialized solar cables, like PV wire, can handle up to 2000 volts, so there's some flexibility depending on what you choose. Just make sure to check the insulation rating on your wire!

EcoFanatic88: Got it, thanks! If the panels are close together, do you even need to run additional wire? I’ve noticed that some panels come with pigtails that look like they might connect just fine by themselves.
