What Are Your Favorite String Trimmers and Do You Use Them for Edging?

I'm on the hunt for some recommendations for string trimmers. Ideally, I want one that can also function as an edger, though trimming is more crucial to me. My old Yardworks 20v trimmer has finally given up, mostly because the battery is dead and it's impossible to find a replacement since that model was discontinued over four years ago. I've been looking into the Greenworks trimmer since I already have two 60v batteries for it, but I've seen mixed reviews about its performance. So, what trimmer do you guys use, and are you happy with it?

I’ve got an Echo PAS 225, and it’s been reliable for years. I just flip it over when I need to edge, and it works like a charm!

I love my Echo too! It’s been running strong for over 15 years and starts up every time!

Echo's definitely a solid choice. Good to hear it lasts that long!

I picked up a Black and Decker corded model for just $20 years ago. Replaced the shield a couple of times, but it still runs! It might just last me forever; I’ll probably have to pass it down someday!

I use the Ryobi 40V series with the Expand-It system, which lets me switch between a string trimmer, metal blade edger, and a pole saw. I’ve found that one battery lasts for my yard work, which is about 1/3 of an acre. It's perfect for my needs, but if you have a bigger yard, consider getting an extra battery just in case!

I have a Black & Decker edger and it works great for me. Paid around $80 six years back, but I’ve noticed the quality isn’t what it used to be. I also use a hand trimmer in tight spots like around my mailbox and lamps. It seems harder to find a good quality edger for my daughter, though.

I was considering the Black & Decker as well; their price point looks great! It’s strange that nobody talks about their yard tools.

I recommend getting good with the trimmer first; you might not even need a dedicated edger! If you do go for one, think about using it early in spring before any weed spraying and then again in the early fall to manage weed growth.
