What are your favorite tips for designing a beautiful garden?

I'm looking to enhance the beauty of my flower gardens but need some advice. Some gardeners have such an artistic touch when it comes to using plants of different heights, colors, and shapes that complement each other. I'm curious if there are specific tricks or basic rules I can follow to achieve this. I learn best through visuals, so I'd love to see pictures of your creations! This is my goal for the year, much like realizing there's a color wheel in painting – I have all the right plants, but I want to improve their overall appeal this season.

Are you looking specifically for color or composition tips? As someone who studied horticulture, I'd love to share what I know! Here’s an example of a composition that works well. Take a look at this image for some inspiration!

When arranging your garden, think of it like taking school photos: taller plants at the back and shorter ones in front! A good mix I aim for is 25% evergreens, 25% perennials, 25% annuals, and 25% herbs for some nice scents. I like to use a few containers here and there for variety, too, so I can switch things up between blooms. Also, check out the concept of 'succession gardening;' it helps ensure there's always something blooming, which keeps your garden lively. I go for the 'thriller, filler, spiller' strategy in my beds—tall plants to the back, trailing ones at the front, and fillers in the middle. Here’s a shot of my garden from last June to give you an idea of how it all looks together!
