I'm diving into building a permanent off-grid energy system for my homestead project. My goal is to power a small outbuilding that will serve as a work studio on weekends and an emergency shelter. I'm going with a 48V setup for cleaner wiring and improved inverter efficiency. Right now, I'm planning to use a 48V 200Ah lithium battery, paired with a 5kW hybrid inverter. However, I'm seeing mixed advice on whether 200Ah is enough for this inverter, especially during high-demand times like running a well pump or mini split. I'm not looking to max out the inverter all the time, but I do want to know how close I can get to that limit with appliances like a 1.5 kW kettle, laptop, lights, and occasional power tools. Any insights would be really helpful to make sure I'm not shortchanging my system while still keeping costs in check.

It sounds like you have a solid plan! I've got a similar setup with a 10kWh battery and a 6kW inverter. Running high-demand appliances has been fine for me, mostly because I use them during the day when solar power is plentiful. Your 200Ah battery should handle the peak loads well, especially if it can discharge at around 100A. Just keep an eye on your usage during high draw events. If you manage your loads smartly, you shouldn't have any problems!

For heavy loads like pumping water, it's a high impact. If you're worried about the mini split, relying on natural cooling during the day could save your battery capacity. Keep in mind, like you, I only use up to 50% DOD on my batteries. Your AC could drain your system faster than you'd like.
