What Beginner Tools Do I Need for Woodworking?

Hi everyone! I'm new to woodworking and really enjoying the craftsmanship involved. I've been watching a ton of woodworking videos lately, especially the ones focusing on hand sanding and hand tools. I'm looking for some guidance on what a beginner's toolkit should include. Can anyone recommend a starter set of tools to get me going?

If you want to start out without spending a fortune, I suggest grabbing the basics: a good tape measure, a combination square, a few clamps, a handsaw, some sandpaper, and a couple of inexpensive chisels. A drill with bits can be helpful too. You'll find plenty of used tools at places like Harbor Freight. Just dive in and start making stuff! A birdhouse is a great beginner project that’s easy to tackle.

Hey! There are tons of videos on YouTube that can help you. First, you should decide if you want to use hand tools, power tools, or a mix of both. Also, think about your budget and the type of projects you want to work on. That'll help narrow down your choices!

It really depends on what kind of projects interest you. If you like sculpting, all you need is a whittling knife and a pencil. For furniture making, I'd recommend getting a hand saw, a set of 3-5 chisels, a hand plane, a square, a couple of clamps, and a sturdy work surface. If marquetry is your thing, you'll want some masking tape, a steel ruler, a cutter knife, and glue. Start simple and grow your toolkit based on what you enjoy!
