Don't underestimate the good old pencil and paper! I know my sketches aren't the best, but drawing things out really helps me remember my designs.

You might want to check out Draftsight. It's quite similar to AutoCAD, and it's either free or reasonably priced. Sure, it has a bit of a learning curve, but there are tons of tutorials available to get you started. Plus, if you’re looking for something easier, Google SketchUp is definitely beginner-friendly.
