What Bulbs and Plants Can I Still Plant for Summer and Autumn?

Hey everyone! I've had an allotment since last year and I'm still figuring things out. I didn't realize I was supposed to plant spring bulbs in the autumn, and now my plot looks bare compared to all the beautiful flowers on other plots. I'm looking for some bulbs or plants I can get in the ground now to brighten things up for the summer and autumn. I'm especially interested in perennials to make future planting easier.

I've tried sowing flower seeds but they haven't been sprouting—maybe it's the unusual heat we're having, and I sometimes miss watering, leaving everything dried out. I also need tips on direct sowing because my attempts with courgettes, squash, and cucumbers recently haven't worked out, and I feel the pressure to get things growing before the monthly inspections. I did manage to grow beans, courgettes, chard, and tomatoes last year from starts, but this season is tougher for me. Any advice would be much appreciated!

If you're just after some quick color, try soaking and planting nasturtium seeds—they thrive even in rough soil and can self-seed. You might also want to consider perennial plug plants like verbena or lupins for a cottage garden feel. As for direct sowing, definitely give cucumbers another shot, but try soaking those seeds first. You can also plant beetroot, carrots, or sugar snap peas right now! And if you really feel like rushing, asking neighbors if they have extra seedlings is a great way to go. I’ve given away a bunch of extras myself!

Nasturtiums sound like a solid plan! I'm picking some up. Soaking seeds is new to me; I'm curious—how long should they soak for? Can I soak them for a few hours before planting?

While this isn’t the prime season for planting bulbs, you still have some options like Dahlias, Gladiolus, or Lilies. But honestly, I’d suggest focusing on quick-growing veggies like radish, chard, or pak choi to help with that inspection coming up! Don't worry, you got this!
