What Bulbs or Seeds Can I Grow with My Students for Early Summer Flowers?

Asked By Teacher_27@science On

I'm a secondary science teacher looking to engage my students in gardening. I want to give each of them some bulbs to plant in pots next week. We're hoping to grow them indoors, with the goal of them sprouting and ideally blooming before the summer months of June and July. Since I'm a total beginner in gardening, I would appreciate any tips on what to buy or what varieties grow well for this purpose!

Just a heads up: these plants need a bit of warmth to start growing. If you don’t have a propagator, covering the pots with cling film can help keep the heat in. I started some last week, and they are already growing tall!

You could try Cosmos seeds! They're not bulbs, but they sprout quickly and reliably. Just plant two seeds in a larger pot or even in a takeout coffee cup, and you might have sturdy plants with flowers by June. Perfect for your students!

Summer annuals are a great choice since they should flower in about 6-8 weeks. Consider Nasturtiums, Calendula, California poppies, or Zinnias; they're all pretty easy to grow and vibrant!

Thank you! I’ll definitely check these out.
