What Can I Do About My ZZ Plant Woes After Overwatering?

I recently lost my favorite ZZ plant due to overwatering a few months ago, and it really hit me hard. To regain my confidence, I bought a small ZZ from the grocery store and took care to repot it in well-draining soil, leaving it alone for over a month. However, I just noticed yellowing leaves and discovered root rot! I can't understand what went wrong since I thought I was being careful with watering and airflow. After cleaning and soaking the roots in hydrogen peroxide, I've replanted it and placed it in a bright spot. Now I'm terrified to water my other ZZs, even the ones that have been dry for a while. What should I do going forward to keep my plants healthy?

It sounds like you were being super careful, but ZZ plants can actually go quite a long time without water—often months! I’d suggest waiting at least a month and a half before watering again. Trust me, they thrive on neglect!

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely try that.

Honestly, I didn't water mine for a whole year. They barely wrinkled and perked right back after a deep watering!

Every plant is different. I water mine a little each week, and it seems super happy, plus it's putting out a ton of new sprouts. Just make sure it dries out during the week to prevent issues with overwatering!

Good to know! I’ll keep an eye on it over the week before watering.
