What Can I Do if My Contractor Won’t Remove Their Dumpster?

I recently had some work done on my house, and now my contractor has gone MIA and won't take away the dumpster that's blocking my driveway. The dumpster is right on the street in front of my house, and it's been there for almost a month. I'm worried about calling 311 and potentially getting a ticket myself. The contractor arranged for the dumpster, and I know that if I call the dumpster company directly, they'll tell me I have to pay out of pocket. To make matters worse, the contractor has been using this dumpster for their friend's job site debris too, which means it's overflowing and heavier than it should be. I haven't paid the final invoice because of another issue with the contractor, and I'm hesitant to pay them anything until this dumpster situation is resolved. They mentioned they are incurring a $50 per day fee with the dumpster company, but if that's the case, why is it still here? What are my options?

Honestly, I think it's unlikely they delivered the dumpster without a deposit from someone. If the contractor didn’t use your card, I say give them a call. You’ve got nothing to lose by checking!

If the dumpster has been on your property for too long, I’d suggest a direct approach. Let the contractor know that it's on private property, and if they don't remove it, you might start charging rent. Or you could even list it for free on a marketplace and have someone haul it off.

You might want to double-check whether the dumpster company would actually charge you. It could be worth calling them to see if they can reach out to the contractor directly before this becomes a bigger issue with city codes.
